Costa Blanca sees surge in second home sales

Despite the economic uncertainty surrounding the Eurozone and a three per cent decline in the total number of property transactions made in Spain, it appears that ownership of second homes in the country is actually increasing.

Taylor Wimpey España recorded a 57 per cent increase in sales on the Costa Blanca alone during 2012.

It says that the region not only remains one of the most popular tourism destinations in Spain but also a second home hotspot, with the increase of sales reflecting buyer demand not just from the UK but across the globe.

According to the Housing and Public Works Department of the regional government in the Costa Blanca, the purchase of homes in the region by foreign citizens accounted for 29 per cent of the total number sold in Spain, a rise of 32 per cent when compared with 2011.

Taylor Wimpey España says that the rise in demand for second homes on the Costa Blanca over the last 12 months is very encouraging, with enquiry rates steadily returning to pre-recession levels. And far from Spain being ‘in pain’, it says that the second homes market in 2012 experienced a real revival, with more buyers from more diverse countries than at any time since 2007.

To say that the Spanish property market has experienced a turbulent few years would be a bit of an understatement, but it appears that our affections for this country show no signs of waning. Spain still accounts for a third of the enquiries we receive at Conti, and that shows no signs of changing. It’s most certainly a buyer’s market, but as always, any of your clients who are thinking of making a purchase must choose carefully, carry out due diligence and seek professional advice.

As long as they treat their property purchase as an investment over the long term, they can still buy with confidence, if they buy wisely.
