According to Credit Action's calculations, average household debt (including mortgages) rose slightly compared to last month's figure to reach £55,808.
However, if mortgages are excluded then average household debt is £7,984 - this is actually lower than the same figure for last month, which means that the amount of unsecured borrowing by the average household has decreased.
Michelle Highman, CEO of Credit Action, said:
"All of us are facing a really tough time this Christmas. Over the course of the next 25 days there will be significant pressure for us to increase our spending and possibly borrow more to fund it.
"Our figures suggest that, on average, the burden of consumer debt has eased up a little recently. Whilst this is clearly good news, we all need to be careful as we start the run up to Christmas.
"Try not to live beyond your means over the festive period - otherwise you might face a difficult New Year. Make a Christmas budget and try to stick to it and avoid unnecessary expenditure, so you can enjoy the celebrations with a sense of financial security."
