As previously announced, the IPA will be holding a one-day personal insolvency conference at The Point at Old Trafford, Manchester on Tuesday 16 November 2010 at which this report will be discussed with other topical issues. The IPA is very pleased to announce that Nick Howard, head of policy at BIS, will be addressing the conference and taking questions from the floor.

Commenting, Carl Faulds, President of the IPA said:

“We are particularly pleased that Nick Howard is able to join us. Nick is directly responsible for this area of policy in the Insolvency Service at BIS, and chairs the IVA Standing Committee. The report highlights the sometimes confusing array of remedies available to individuals and the fact that there may be no consistency of treatment through the different debt solution processes.

"This is one area where there is scope for reform. We need a sensible balance – fair treatment by creditors in cases of real hardship, but an understanding that there is a reasonable expectation that those who can pay should do so.

"We intend to use the issues discussed at our conference as part of our response to BIS. That we will be able to debate this directly with representatives of government, creditors and debt solution providers in the heartland of the IVA/debt management industry in the UK is extremely beneficial and makes our personal insolvency conference on 16 November a key date for everyone involved in this sector.”
