Seasonally-adjusted figures show that 96,979 flats or houses were sold in the month of November - the highest number since December 2009. However, the number of transactions is still far below the peak of the market, when up to 150,000 homes were being sold every month.

A rise in the housing market activity is generally seen as a positive sign, as long as prices do not get out of control.

Last week, the CML reported a 30% rise in lending over the last year, although the amount being borrowed dropped slightly in November.
