The amount lent on mortgages completed by the Society in August was up 68 per cent on the value of completions in August 2012, and was 28 per cent higher than the value of completions in May 2012, which was the busiest month last year.

Yorkshire Building Society senior product manager Chris Smith said:

"We enjoyed an exceptionally busy month at the Yorkshire during August.

"This was our busiest month for mortgage completions since November 2011, and followed an increase in business month on month since the start of 2013.

"So far this year we've had more best buy mortgages than any other lender and have been working hard to ensure we continue to offer borrowers a wide choice of competitive products that best meet their individual needs.

"As a mutual we are focused on lending responsibly and sustainably but our aim is to help borrowers across all LTV levels, including first time buyers."
