Christmas, buy-to-let, and the power of belief

The festive season is upon us and while it’s not always a happy time for everyone and, yes, the commercialism of the holiday has kind of taken over, there’s always one thing that can’t fail to put a smile on my face at this time of year – and that is the magic in children’s faces.

"I truly believe the market is on the up and that 2019 will be a great year for the sector."

Remember being a kid and anxiously waiting for the big man in red to arrive with presents and treats? Remember the excitement when you were almost certain you heard sleigh bells ringing?

There’s definitely something magical about the belief little ones have in Father Christmas. It makes the season for me. And it also got me thinking about the power of belief.

Now, before I continue I’d like to make a disclaimer. I’m by no means suggesting that sheer hope can turn an industry’s fortunes around or make challenges disappear, but having a strong belief certainly does help.

If you’ve not already guessed I’m referring to the buy-to-let market. We can all agree we’ve had a challenging few years and it’s been very easy for the national press to claim the buy-to-let sector is at an end. But I truly believe the market is on the up and that 2019 will be a great year for the sector.

We’re seeing innovation in the sector, the likes of which you only really see when players are forced to up their game. Lenders are coming out with exciting products and attractive ranges as they try to help landlords to navigate the changes.

Limited company buy-to-let is continuing to grow as more and more lenders respond to the needs of landlords.

Rates are falling all the time. Indeed, Leeds Building Society has cut its two-year rate to just 1.14%, rivalling even the most competitive residential loans.

And, perhaps most importantly, brokers have risen to the challenge like never before. The calibre of advice and customer service being offered across the sector at the moment is hugely impressive. Landlords need guidance more than ever and brokers have responded in the best way they know, helping their clients to be successful despite the challenges.

So yes, it’s been tough but I think we’re all well placed to have a great 2019 and I truly believe we will.
