Scottish Building Society has become the first UK lender to go live on a sovereign AI platform built specifically for core banking, in partnership with SBS and NVIDIA.
The platform runs entirely within the building society's own environment on Amazon Web Services, meaning no customer or mortgage data leaves their walls. The Society says it is already seeing 30 to 40% faster response times with more consistent outputs, while maintaining the full explainability and audit trail that regulators require.
SBS says for UK banks and building societies exploring AI, compliance has historically been the blocker. Most AI platforms require customer and mortgage data to leave the institution's environment, creating significant regulatory exposure under FCA and PRA oversight.
Scottish Building Society’s deployment of SBS and NVIDIA’s AI system addresses that need, and the platform is now available to other SBS clients across the UK.
In the near future, the solution will encompass Agentic AI, which automates core banking workflows with autonomous agents that execute multi-step banking processes, transparently with human oversight and within a fully governed environment.
Eric Bierry, CEO of SBS, commented: “Banks want AI they can trust, explain and run wherever their data must live. By building with NVIDIA, we can give our customers that assurance without compromising on governance. We are already seeing the results from this work with our early customers, and we look forward to continuing to roll out these capabilities as we help more financial institutions take advantage of AI efficiencies.”
Aser Blanco, global head of banking at NVIDIA, added: "SBS is turning a governed AI runtime into a shared intelligence layer beneath its entire banking platform. With NVIDIA, SBS is giving banks the tools they need to deploy generative and agentic AI across cloud and sovereign infrastructure. Once they have this infrastructure in place, the capabilities it unlocks drive efficiency and ultimately power growth.”
